ame chawan

ame chawan

Ø 14cm

like the previous piece, this chawan has been made
from a near-white, highly translucent porcelain clay.
glazes with high ash and silica content seem to develop
a special quality in combination with this body.
this so-called Ame (meaning a type of caramel candy
in japanese) glaze is similar to the sand/wood ash glaze
used on the previous piece,
with the addition of iron ore from the styrian "Erzberg"
(literally iron ore mountain), making it darker.
it has a streaky, hare´s fur like character and
tends to be quite runny, making it necessary to fire
the piece on little wads of fireclay covered with seashells.
the walls of the bowl are translucent, despite the dark glaze!
